Tips to Working With a Designer to Create Your T-Shirt

Not everyone is a graphic designer, and while design programs are more accessible than ever before, if you want something designed for a T-shirt for your business, team band, or school you may not have the time to teach yourself how to use them. Thankfully, at Above All Screening, we have a team of designers who can take your vision and make it a reality. If you do not have experience working with a graphic designer, then it can be challenging to get across what you want. To help streamline the process, here are some tips from our team to you on how to work with a graphic designer to get the best possible result.

Listen to Your Designer

Our designers work with screen printing every day, so they know what works best, what is possible, and what might not end up looking great. Have some faith in us and take our expertise into account. We promise that our goal is to get you the best possible looking product. We do not want you to end up with something unsatisfactory, especially when we know that little tweaks would have made it better. Try to have faith, and we promise your design will turn out great!

Be Specific

Designers do love having freedom, but when you don’t know what you want it can lead to a lot of wasted work. Do brainstorming and look at other designs that you like. Coming with examples of other work you like is a great method of communication, as is providing information on the colours you want (especially if company colours must be matched). The more information that you give the more the end design will look like what you imagined and the happier you will be. A great example of why specifying is important is, let’s say, you make a request for a design featuring a dog. If you just say “a dog” then that leaves the designer with over 300 unique breeds of dog to choose from. You will be disappointed if you really wanted a design featuring a pug and you get one featuring a great dane.

Talk About Making Improvements Instead of Fixing Mistakes

Graphic designers are very used to receiving criticism and needing to redo designs; it comes with the territory. That does not mean that designers are impervious to harsh judgements though. If you do not like something that they designed or it just isn’t quite there yet, then use positive language. Instead of telling them “that font is ugly” consider saying “I would prefer a different font here” and if you can provide an example of a font you like better it will help tremendously. Remember, you’re working together as a team!

Give Designers a Bit of Freedom

While having too few ideas isn’t great, have too many can make things difficult for a designer. If you have a very specific vision, and not everything from your vision is included in your designer’s draft, ask them why it was left out. Sometimes there are very good reasons for why omissions were made, including designs being too busy. Have some flexibility and you will find the piece that is created is much more beautiful than one made under tight constraints.
